To the members of the Waynesboro City Council:
Waynesboro citizens are counting on you to create a rental inspection program to prevent property deterioration, unsafe living conditions, neighborhood decline, and blight. The City of Waynesboro agreed that a rental inspection program is a priority in the latest comprehensive plan, setting this goal and underlining the risks if it is not met: “Without an intervention in the form of strict rental property registration requirements, inspections, and unbending code enforcement, many of these property’s only future use will be as slum dwellings acquired by toxic investors whose positive cash flow will only come from taking advantage of vulnerable tenants.”
Over 40% of our city’s residents are renters, a number that will likely continue to climb. Our city leaders must promote safe, decent, habitable, and sanitary rental properties for all of our city residents. Disregarding a rental inspection program amounts to disregarding tenants and the community. Ignoring the problem is not an option.
We, the undersigned, ask that you adopt an ordinance to inspect residential rental dwelling units for compliance with the Building Code and to promote safe, decent, and sanitary housing for all Waynesboro citizens.
